Introduction
|
The Games and Sports Division was established as a unit under the Youth Guidance
and Counseling Section (YGCS) in the year 2000 to promote organized sports and
physical activities as an integral part of wholesome development of children.
Since then, organized sports and physical activities were vigorously pursued as
it contributes to all-round harmonious development of children. The practice of
sports and physical activities not only enhance physical well-being but greatly
help children acquire essential social values and skills such as
self-confidence, team-work, discipline, interpersonal relationship and
cooperation. Moreover, taking part in sports improves children's cognitive
skills which enable them to learn better. It is therefore, an endeavor of the
Games and Sports Division to use sports and physical activities as a vehicle to
enhance overall development in making them healthy, responsible, and productive
citizens. It is also the intention of the Games and Sports Division to
institutionalize and to decentralize school sports programs to Dzongkhags to
make it more effective and sustainable in the long run. The philosophy of GSD is
based on “ development through sports” and today the programs of GSD are all
centered on this ideal.
